It's The Final Count Down...

Hey everybody! So bonus points goes out to whoever got the song reference in the title, but I'm actually not gonna talk about music today. Today I'm talking about stories. In my Creative Writing Class we were talking about different stories and more specifically about the length of them.

In my past classes whenever I've had to write something there was always a length requirement. Most of the time it had to be at least two pages and the longest piece I had to write was 12 pages. So you can imagine my shock when my Creative Writing teacher tells us that for our in class assignment. We have to write a story in 50 words or less.

What...?

Trust me, you heard me right. 50 words or less.

So I always love a challenge I quickly got an idea and began to write. First try, no luck. Got about 100 words. Second try, no luck. Got about 60 words that time. As you can imagine after a few more tries I finally got down to 50 words exactly. My story had very little detail and I mean VERY little detail. It surprisingly had two people in it, and a very short conversation. As you will see later on.

Then I got to thinking, if we can write large thesis papers and books miles long. Why cant we do short ones as well? Apparently there are whole publishing companies that publish stories specifically that are short, sweet, and to the point.

I wanted to share the story I had written for class. Its actually more difficult than what it looks. But I had lots of fun doing it.

I sat there trembling as I went to go open the door. I felt the metal from the knob as I turned and the door creaked open. All I saw was darkness. “Hello? Is anyone there?” The murderer yelled from the kitchen.  “Yea, I’m making a sandwich! You want one?”

I got the idea from the typical scene in majority of horror movies. Where someone goes into a place knowing there is danger around the corner. Instead of running from it they go towards it and get killed. Well that was where I got my inspiration for my short story. Turn the typical scary story into something comical instead.

So here is my challenge to you! Write a story for me in 50 words or less about anything you want. I would love to see them! Have a great day!

  1. I had much the same response while I was doing my 50 word story. My story consisted of a lady in the middle of the night to movement down stairs. She grabbed her baseball bat and moved downstairs, to just see her dog eating. My original story was exactly 50 words. My friend and I did this at work once so I was used to it.
